“Good food is the foundation of genuine happiness” – Auguste Escoffier. But how good is your food even though it’s written ‘healthy’ on it?

Food business are sprung all over the market under various names and tags; such as: processed foods, dry foods, baked foods, low cholesterol foods, canned foods, fat-free foods, sugar-free foods, gluten-free foods, protein rich foods, ready  to eat foods and so on. Most of the foods sold in the market are actually not as healthy as it seems. All the branding and labels attached to the packaging sounds healthy and hardly have we known that there are some healthy sounding foods that are actually unhealthy.

Let’s have a check on the types of unhealthy foods that are thought to be healthy:

1. Wheat Bread

There are breads in the market, that’s marketed as wheat bread or multi-grained breads. Sounds very healthy but it might be not as healthy as it seems. That might not be a 100% whole wheat bread. It might contain flours that are rich in sugar and carbohydrates. Also, wheat breads can also contain gluten which can cause migraine, weight problem and many such diseases.

2. Low-fat peanut butter

Peanut butters are taste boosters for your food. But the marketed low-fat peanut butter or fat-free peanut butters are unhealthy. Because they replace the fat with other fillers and sugars. So it’s better to stick with the natural version of the peanut butter.

3. Veggie chips

Vegetable chips sound very nutritious and healthy than other fried chips. Reason: Its vegetables! But almost all the nutrients are gone from the vegetable chips after it’s fried or baked. Furthermore the high sodium content can lead to increase in blood pressure which will affect heart health. It also contains fats. So it’s better to eat fresh vegetables than to have veggie chips on a regular basis.

4. Protein bars

Sounds proteinaceous and healthy, protein bars are especially known as work out foods as they are likely to supply proteins which are needed for muscle building and enhancement. But all might not be rich in protein only. Some might contain excessive preservatives and artificial flavours that are of course not a good choice to consume as a health bar. You might also be getting high sugars and hydrogenated vegetable oils. All these are not only bad for health but also can cause nausea, dehydration and diarrhoea.

5. Flavoured nuts

Plain nuts seem boring; and probably any flavour added to the nuts can make an add-on to the taste. But that doesn’t make the nuts any healthier. Rather the flavoured nuts make a thick coating of sugar or salt. So it’s better to limit your consumption of nuts to plain natural unflavoured nuts only.

6. Protein shakes

Protein shakes are meant to build your muscles, increase amount of protein in body, fills your stomach and supply healthy nutrients. But it might not be good for lactose intolerant persons. Because, most of the protein shakes include high amount of lactose that can cause abdominal pains or stomach pains. Moreover, the added flavours contain artificial sweeteners and additives that will spike blood sugar levels.

7. Veggie Burger

The vegetable burger might seem healthy, just because it’s not a meat burger. But is that enough to consider it healthy? The vegetables are packed together by butter or oil so that the veggie patty can hold itself together in between the buns. And if you are about to calculate, then mind you, it can take up to 1000 calories along with the toppings. Veggie burgers also have high amount of sodium that can cause serious high blood pressure.

8. Flavoured Yogurt

In the market there are plenty of flavoured yogurts available to water your mouth and you will probably devour into an assumed ‘healthy’ food with flavours. But the flavours in it are artificial flavours that are definitely not good for the health in the long run. Also, the sugar content is more in flavoured yogurt than normal yogurt. Flavoured yogurt contains more sugar and calories than its supposed to be. It’s better to have a normal plain yogurt or a homemade yogurt.

9. Dried Fruits

Fruits, be it raw, fresh or dried are considered to be healthy and nutritious. Dried fruits surely do have vitamins, minerals and fibres. It does provide many nutrients to your body. Nowadays, dried fruits contains high amount of added sulphur and sugar or sweeteners to keep it preserved and make it sweet. Hence, it’s better to have fresh fruits instead of dried fruits sold in markets.

10. Energy drinks

Energy drinks are sold in the market as an instant energy boosters, that drives away all your tiredness and fatigue. It’s supposedly a non-alcoholic drink that contains taurine, caffeine, vitamins and other ingredients. Energy drinks “may pose danger to public health” warns WHO. Consumption of energy drinks may cause sensation-seeking behaviour, poor dental health, dizziness, insomnia, headache, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal upset, etc.
