So far, it was considered a male dominated bastion. But this time, the women are taking it over as well. On Wednesday they were inducted in the force at the passing out ceremony in the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, in Kannur. The ceremony was quite impressive in which around 328 cadets of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and two oversees cadets: one from Tanzania and the other one from Maldives, passed successfully thereby completing their courses.

Shubnhangi Swaroop hailing from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh is appointed the first woman pilot in the Indian Navy. She will undergo pilot training at Dundigal Air Force Academy in Hyderabad. “I know this is not just an exciting opportunity but a great responsibility also” said Shubhangi.

The other proficient women who have been inducted in the NAI branch were Aastha Segal, Roopa A and Sakthimava S. In fact their appointment in the Naval Armament Inspection (NAI) branch as officers is also a great respectable recognition for the women in India and this too is also happening for the first time in the history of Indian Navy.

According to Admiral Sunil Lanba, the Chief of Naval Staff, who reviewed the passing out parade, said that though the Indian Navy had started inducing female officers since 1991, the areas of induction have been expanded furthermore.

This is a very proud moment for India and the women in India as this will encourage more and more women to join the defence forces.
