The festival provides a common platform for worldwide cinemas to showcase the excellence of film art. It brings in the appreciation and understanding of different film cultures and promotes a mutual cooperation as well as friendship among the people round the globe.

The current 48th edition of this auspicious festival was inaugurated by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) on 20th November 2017 that’s held at Panjim Goa.

On the opening day Shah Rukh Khan playfully remarked about the raging uproar and controversy on Indian films, especially over the film ‘Padmavati’ that’s been creating a lot of chaos and controversy all over.

Opening with the quote ‘Vasudaiva kutumbhakam’ meaning bringing the world together just like one family, King Khan said, “I believe no matter what your language is, story-telling and listening should be a familial experience which binds us together, even in the face of dissent and discussion as it usually happens in a family, instead of tearing us apart.”

According to him, every film narrates a story, it has its own voice and it must be heard even though there are discussions and pre-assumptions regarding that film made all over. “I truly believe that films are made with the collaboration of hundreds of people coming together, working relentlessly for an idea they believe in and they love and they want to share it with the world”.

Our country had the culture of storytelling and story listening that’s been coming for ages. Moreover he believes in a mutual understanding that should be between a story-teller and the story-listener. “Sometimes we dance along with the film. At other times, we get angry, disturbed or agitated. That exactly is the magic of storytelling, a magic which has the power to touch all our senses and in doing so, actually binding us together. The essence of storytelling is incomplete, if there is no story listener. And I believe that storytellers and story-listeners are or at least should be like a family”.

Top Indian delegates, film celebrities were present on IFFI 2017 such as: Smriti Irani, the  Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting (I&B), Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Sridevi, Shahid Kapoor, Muzaffar Ali the head of the competition’s international jury and other dignitaries were also present.
