The World Cup is going to be held in just 7 weeks. Yes, the FIFA U-17 World Cup will begin from the 6th of October at six host cities. And on that note, Salt Lake Stadium is fully renovated; however the works are still going on. The renovation work got 10 out of 10 from Javier Ceppi, The Tournament Director of World Cup.

The entire project of the renovation and decoration is undertaken by Government of West Bengal. The PWD Department took the entire responsibility of renovations while the spearheading of the whole process was taken by the Department of Sports.

The stadium has a capacity of 1,20,000 holding the record of being the largest stadium in Asia. It can house 80,000 accommodations with bucket seats that have been placed throughout.

Security is undoubtedly the utmost priority. It has to be ensured that a complete evacuation of the stadium can be done in eight minutes.  Ceppi stated, “Keeping in mind the security concerns, the capacity has been reduced to 66,687, after FIFA enforced a guideline following a study with the Sports Grounds Safety Authority of the UK.”

The dressing rooms and bathrooms have been entirely modified. It’s been upgraded to make it appropriate for meeting up FIFA’s standards. Some dressing rooms are capable of fitting 25 players and two have space for 23 people.

Amit Malhotra of Sports Turf and Golf Enterprise told to a news group, “The new grass is from Reivera Bermuda seeds procured from the USA and below it there are two layers of sand (300mm) and gravel (100mm). The next layer is fitted with perforated pipes so that water-logging won’t be an issue.”

The stadium has undergone an outstanding change. The overall cost for renovation of the stadium is 100 crore. It cannot be compared with what it was before. Electrical wirings have been completely changed, new firefighting system has been installed, and new CCTV camera system has been implemented. It has now completely transformed from a jungle to something that even FIFA gave a 10 out of 10 rating.

This FIFA U-17 World Cup shall attract millions of spectators and football devotees and hopes to create a history in the nation. Thanks to the effort of the Government of West Bengal and the Honourable Chief Minister who took the attempt to a whole new level and FIFA is pretty much impressed!
