Tunarama’s Tuna Toss Tournament is the Wackiest Sport You’ve Ever Heard Of

Port Lincoln is a small but noted city in South Australia. It’s a well known city for its tuna fish market business. The main economy of Port Lincoln is based upon canning, fish processing and tuna fish marketing. In fact the city celebrates a festival that’s based on honouring the city’s biggest market industry:  Tuna fishing.

The festival is known as Tunarama. Of course the name says it all. But out of all sorts of celebrations, the main attraction happens to be the Tuna Toss Competition. Yes, that might sound very weird, but it actually happens.  People from all corners of the world come to have a look at this festival and also take part at the tuna toss throw. The game rule sounds simple but in reality that might not be that easy. The one, who can throw the heaviest of tuna fish to the farthest of distance, is the winner. Sounds wacky? Yes it is. But when there are innumerable crowds cheering up for some crazy contestants throwing some heavy tuna fish, you will naturally get some insane fun out of it.

From where this wacky tuna toss actually started? Well every crazy thing has some interesting story behind it. Tuna Toss also has its own. Back in the days, the port used to be crowded with ships, trucks and men. The port had men who threw all the tuna up in to the waiting trucks. The local lads, in search of jobs used to apply for working in the port. Hence, they had to pass a simple test whose reward is: one paid job! They had to throw a fish as far as they can or as per needed. The best throwers would be getting a job for that day. This activity became a sporty entertainment. And that’s how the festival got its name and fame.

At present, the Tunarama Festival is one of the most attracting events that take place when there are plentiful supplies of fish, making Tuna Toss competition one of the crowd-pleasing events.

People from all over the world apply their luck to action as they are allowed to participate in Tuna Toss. Sun kissed skins; clear sky on the above, the sea glistening all in cool blue on the background and all the participants tossing the fish in a hammer throw style is such a thing to watch.  The cash prize is worth the toss though. The prize money can go up to $ 3000 if you can win out the tournament. Make sure your fish flies the highest and farthest.

In 1998 an Aussie Hammer Thrower created a record of tossing a tuna to 37.23m. And that record still holds so far.

Tunarama jazzes up with many other eye-catching events, such as: Tunarama Ambassador Quest where entrants get the platform for raising funds, Street Procession, Live music performed by artists, musicians, and children entertainers and the list is on, topped with foods, drinks and many goodies.

The Tuna Toss Competition is therefore a paramount example of how Port Lincoln city has preserved its own history, creating its unique identity and offering utmost respect to the tuna fish market industry. When industry blooms with technological advancement here the people of Port Lincoln honours the industry that started with maximum manual labour and till this date, the industry, had driven forward its success.

I have never heard of this activity before but it sure is fun and unique. It looks like the hammer throw event in the Olympics, only this time, it is tuna!

This is one unique "sporting" event. I have never heard of such an event until now. It must have been so cool to see "flying tuna.." The strength of those contestants must be unbelievable to hurl a big heavy fish that far.

Looks like quite an interesting festival. Would never have thought a hammer throw doing a fish. I can only imagine how the whole tradition started but it's so cool.

Each country has its own traditions and "strange events and rites' about food. The point is that when a food and a food industry and activity, like fishing in this case, is so rooted in a small area, the rites connected are so many and so strong and become a part of local imaginary. No matter if I am veg, I find interesting anthropology-wise, such kind of events
