Twitter is Increasing the Character Limits to 280.

Tweet down your thoughts with more words now, as twitter is about to roll out longer tweets whose character limit will be 280 characters. The character limit was previously 140 which are now doubling up to 280, for the Twitter users to use more words in order to make their tweets more expressive.

In every country longer tweets will be available except for Chinese, Korean and Japanese language. In these language tweets will remain of 140 characters. Because, according to Twitter, the Asian language can fit thoughts within fewer characters and the average length of a Japanese tweet in Japanese tweet are fifteen characters only.

After a global test, longer tweets worth 280 characters will roll out around the globe. Twitter wrote in a blog, “People who had more room to Tweet received more engagement (Likes, Retweets, @mentions), got more followers, and spent more time on Twitter”. Moreover, the company’s spokesperson Will Stickney said that Twitter has been testing longer tweets with “tens of millions” of Twitter users.

Furthermore, the company added in the blog post,” More space makes it easier for people to fit thoughts in a tweet, so they could say what they want to say, and send Tweets faster than before.
