After the success of PadMan, Akshay Kumar is back as the flag-bearing coach of a pre-independence Indian hockey team. In this film, Akshay Kumar plays the role of Tapas Das, hockey Coach who dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal for free India. Directed by Reema Kagti, the film has been shot in the United Kingdom as well as in India.

The trailer opens with a voice-over announcing the words, “Gold, British India,” and an intense looking Akshay giving ‘the Stare’ to the British Flag. The over two-minutes long trailer features talented actors like Akshay Kumar, Vineet Kumar Singh, Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Mouni Roy and Sunny Kaushal. The trailer is a mix of patriotism and sports. Mouni Roy is making her Bollywood debut as Akshay’s wife and can be seen scolding him in Bengali in the trailer.

Akshay will be seen as a Bengali in the film. It is perhaps for the first time that Akshay plays a Bengali role. Inspired by true events, Gold captures India’s first Olympic Games’ win as a free country in hockey. India defeated its former colonial masters on their very soil and the pull of the story is obvious. Sharing the trailer, Akshay wrote, “Winners under British India, Legends under Free India. Witness the golden era of Indian Hockey through #Gold.”

In an interview,  Akshay Kumar pointed out a coincidence, “Gold releases on August 15 and on August 12 is the 70th anniversary of India’s first gold medal as a free country at the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London. The release couldn’t have been planned better. It’s a matter of pride that while we celebrate the 70th anniversary of one of our first biggest victories on foreign soil in hockey, we will also host the Hockey World Cup. As for the sport getting its due, I think this was long overdue.”

Earlier there were a few reports suggesting Gold is a biopic. The Film’s producer Ritesh Sidhwani had earlier told PTI, “It is not a biopic. It is a completely fictional story but it is set against a real backdrop between 1933-48 India about what the country was, the sports... about hockey. It is not based on any character.”

Gold will release on 15th August. The day also marks 70 years of independent India’s first gold medal at the 1948 Olympics. The Film will lock with John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee’s Satyamev Jayate.

The trailer has left fans in awe and they can’t stop showering praises. Twitterati is also expressing their admiration. Check out reactions:
